Winter: Give your home a late Christmas present!

The last of the gifts has been unwrapped. The last of the guests are bidding fond farewells (or maybe not). The last of the mince pies have been eaten (though the same can’t be said of the turkey). It’s time to draw breath, before the Bacchanalia of New Year’s Eve.

Take a look around you. The decorations are still up, the cards are on the mantelpiece, the fairy lights are twinkling... right now the house looks as pretty as a picture. But soon it’ll be time to pack it all away. Back to earth with a bump.

However, you can soften the landing with a mini home makeover in early 2025. A lick of paint here and there, some new light fittings perhaps, maybe some colourful cushions for the sofa – all these can work wonders.

And to really make a statement, to really bring your living space to life, nothing beats a new floor. So what are the flooring trends for 2025 likely to be?

At M&D Flooring, we reckon one overriding watchword is going to be sustainability: recycled materials such as rubber, wood, plastics and so on, or plentiful and easily renewable, such as bamboo or cork.

And if you think being eco-friendly restricts your choice – think again. Plastics and rubber can be reused to make vinyl or laminate floors and luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs), which come in any colour and pattern you like. Wood, too, can be engineered to make... well... engineered wood: it’s cheaper and more durable than the “real” thing (in quotes because engineered wood is no less real) and, with the right veneer, indistinguishable.

So, no shortage of materials. But what to do with them? Well, the word on the street seems to be... there are no rules!

Parquet is set to make a comeback, with geometric patterns such as herringbone, chevron and Versailles. It’s ideal for the hallway or dining room, although perhaps a bit austere for the lounge. Then again, you could soften the look in the living room with a selection of colourful rugs in different materials, layered or otherwise – the keyword here is eclectic.

If you don’t fancy parquet but you do fancy wood (or wood-effect), the popularity of wide and long planks seems to be on the rise. But don’t imagine the boards have to be left au naturel – you can have them any colour you want. For flooring in general, 2025 is as much about texture (how it feels underfoot) as it is about looks.

Well... sort of.

If you’re going for laminates or LVTs, the advice seems to be to go bold: contrasting colours and geometric patterns look set to be all the rage in 2025. If you’re blessed with a large kitchen or bathroom, consider a black-and-white zig-zag look. Or Moroccan tiles: super-colourful, but perhaps a bit busy – maybe best deployed sparingly.

If your living space is open-plan, it might be harder to decide which flooring solution works best. The good news is you don’t have to. Mixing and matching – e.g. wood giving way to LVTs giving way to carpet – is set to be very on-trend in the coming year.

When it comes to bedrooms, however, carpet is still king. Soft, warm underfoot, comfortable, comforting, and yet to be bettered.
