Engineered and
solid wood flooring

Engineered and solid wood flooring is available in many different thicknesses, widths, lengths, designs and colours. It’s very natural and stylish, and with each board being individual, a wood floor can last many years if it’s looked after properly. It can also be re-sanded and finished after years of wear which removes discolouration, dents and scratches to make it look like new again.

What’s the difference between engineered wood and solid wood?

We’re asked this question a lot, and the best way to explain it is that when fitted they’ll both look the same as the surfaces are both made from a solid wood such as oak or walnut.

The construction of engineered wood is made up of different layers of plywood and solid wood with the top layer ‘veneer’ being the real wood part, with either a click fit system or a tongue and groove joint. The solid wood is just that, a solid piece of wood – most likely oak – that’s manufactured into floor planks, usually with a tongue and groove joint system.

Thicknesses, widths and lengths

Engineered and solid wood flooring is available in many variants and options. In general, the thinner and narrower boards are the cheapest as it takes less wood to make the finished product, while the wider, thicker or longer boards are the most expensive as there is more real wood and manufacturing involved.

Designs

Wood comes in planks of different lengths and widths, as well as in short or long herringbone designs and chevron planks.

Colours

We can supply different species of wood. The most commonly used is oak, but there is also walnut and maple to name just a few, and these are naturally different colours. The most common way of having a coloured wood floor would be to lay an oak floor that has been stained or oiled to appear a different colour. This is done either at the point of manufacture or we can lay an unfinished oak and then sand and stain it once it's been fitted.

Surface textures

Wood comes in many finishes, including oiled or lacquered, and can be matt or shiny. We also have samples of surfaces that are smooth, textured, hand scraped or aged, and you can even get a version called 'axe finish' and it's exactly that!

Wood sanding and re-finishing

As a company, we also refurbish existing wood flooring whether it’s your existing floor boards or just an older solid or engineered wood floor. You’ll be amazed at what can be achieved when a floor is refurbished properly! This could just be a light surface sand with a topcoat of oil or lacquer re-applied, which is recommended if your floor just looks a bit dull or you want to freshen it up. This process won’t remove any scratches or dents, however. If you do have a few dents and scratches we can do a deeper sanding which will take away a few millimetres of the wood surface to remove them and we can then re-apply a top surface protection such as an oil or a lacquer.
