It’s important to create the best possible impression by selecting the most appropriate flooring while also taking into account how the area is used. Flooring for a busy corridor will have different requirements compared to flooring used in a showroom, shop or restaurant, for example.

In some areas it will be worth spending more for commercial flooring that is higher quality and longer lasting, depending on how often you plan to update your décor. It’s important to think of the impression that you want to give to visitors and clients, not only in the colours or designs that you choose but also in terms of how they feel.

Walking on a carpet gives a much softer feel underfoot and is less noisy than laminate flooring, although the noise level can be reduced a great deal if it’s laid correctly. Wooden and laminate flooring give a modern feel to an environment and can withstand a lot of use without showing signs of wear and tear.

You wouldn’t usually install laminate flooring in areas where there’s water around, either in the form of spillages or steam, such as in kitchens or bathrooms. Vinyl flooring is better for those areas as it’s easy to clean and more hygienic, plus it’s also safer as it’s less likely to become slippery when it’s wet.

Commercial vinyl flooring comes in 2m widths and has welded seams. Any commercial building is likely to have some form of commercial vinyl in use, and this could be in the kitchens, toilets, corridors or workshops. The vinyl can be fitted up to existing skirting boards or using a system called ‘cap and cove’, which is where any existing skirting is removed then a PVC cove forma and capping strip are fixed to the wall which allows the vinyl to be curved up the wall and tucked neatly into the capping strip. This allows for ease of cleaning and lower maintenance due to there being no skirting boards to re-paint. It also creates a perfect seal between the floor and the wall.

The amount of use and wear and tear of your commercial flooring is usually going to be much greater than that used for domestic properties. As well as durability, it’s worth considering the practical side of maintaining and keeping your flooring clean and how that fits in with the way the area’s used.
